I thought I made a profit – what could have happened?

Profit may be affected by spread, commission, or slippage. Here’s why.

Reasons your trade might not show a profit

If you expected a profit but didn’t see one, here are some possible explanations:

  • Spread:

    • Buy orders open at the ask price and close at the bid price

    • Sell orders open at the bid price and close at the ask price

    • The price must move beyond the spread before your trade enters profit

  • Commission fees:

    • Commissions are deducted automatically

    • If your profit is smaller than the fee, the net result may be negative

  • Slippage:

    • During high volatility, trades may not execute at your intended price

    • This can affect both entry and exit prices, reducing or eliminating expected profit
